First Morning Specimen

The first morning urine is the ideal screening specimen because it is more concentrated than the random specimen.

Furthermore, the first morning urine is also important for preventing false-negative pregnancy tests and for evaluating orthostatic proteinuria.

How to collect it? The patient is instructed to immediately collect the specimen upon arising and deliver it to laboratory within one hour.

So what is the importance of delivering the specimen within 1 hour? And if you can't is it best to refrigerate it?

@Wayne... Thanks for dropping by.
The importance of delivering the specimen within one hour is to prevent bacterial growth. Refrigeration is one method of preserving the urine. However, disadvantages of using this method should also be considered.

@your "Health Assistant"... happy holidays too and thanks for dropping by.
@Atif...Thanks. Maybe because the most common specimen is the random specimen.

It's also important because some important elements desintegrate over time.

I want to wish you Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Is it really one hour? I've heard something like 3 hours before; one hour seems to be pretty quick. It seems like that is something that would need to be planned for the night prior.

@Tom Sawyer... That is to prevent bacterial growth.
Thanks for dropping by.

Ah so that is the reason why they say it on pregnancy test package, that you do the test on the morning. This is a great info for non medicals like me. I remember a funny incident where my friend collected a urine sample but has to travel an hour before she gets to the hospital. Funny because her urine test result was really awful.
