Elevated Amylase

amylase, pancreatitis, Rico Yan, laboratory test, medical technology, health, human diseases, bangungotAfter my uncle suffered from pancreatitis and fortunately, he was immediately brought to the hospital, all of us wanted to have our laboratory test done for amylase, which is used to detect or diagnose pancreatitis. However, according to my uncle's physician, elevated amylase level in the body will only occur if there's an injury to the pancreas.

Last March 29, 2002, Rico Yan, matinee idol, died of pancreatitis (bangungot).

Very sad story. I'm wondering if there are genetic tests these days to detect a tendency towards this type of cancer. Last I heard they were working on it, although the ethics involved are questionable because of things like medical insurance getting involved with the genetic test results.

Again, sorry for your loss

In pancreatitis its more sensitive to go for serum lipase than getting serum amylase because could also elevate with other disease entities not just pancreatitis

i've had a number of students who died supposedly because of "bangungot" (nightmares). it is so sudden and undetectable. wish we could be able to do something more to prevent such medical "accidents".

@jhun... Thanks for that info. Sometimes doctors would go for serum amylase.

@Alem... Yes, I also hope there would be more medical breakthroughs to combat with diseases. But maybe an annual laboratory checkup can help.

Thank you all for dropping by.

both serum amylase and serum lipase are usually requested if the case is highly suggestive of pancreatitis.
