Endometriosis: Do You Know These Facts?

If you’re following Lena Dunham on her Facebook official Page, you’re now aware of her medical condition known as endometriosis. On her Facebook Page, she told her fans that she’s going to take a break to rest due to her condition.

Endometriosis is pretty common among women in their 30s and 40s. For most women with this condition, it can interfere with their career or work. According to the National Institutes of Health, this condition affects 6 to 10 percent of women in their reproductive age.

This medical condition occurs when the tissue that lines your uterus has been found outside of your uterus. When you menstruate, a few of your cells travel to your fallopian tubes. They go to your abdomen and implant themselves where they should not be. These cells also implant to other muscles or organs in your body.

When they’re implanted in other parts of the body, they continue to act as if they’re still inside the uterus. This means that these cells bleed during menstrual period. But, instead of bleeding outside of the body, they bleed inside.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

Unfortunately, 11 percent of women are asymptomatic. The rest of women with this condition feel pain during their menstrual cycles. Other women may develop chronic pain. As the pain gets worse, the condition causes diarrhoea, bowel problems, and other medical issues.

If it’s left untreated, the cells that implanted into the muscles and organs will grow and may cause scars. The growth can cause the patient to have difficulty in getting pregnant. She’s highly likely to become infertile.

Laparoscopic surgery

This is one of the most common ways to diagnose an endometriosis. In this procedure, a small microscope is inserted into your belly. It will look into your pelvic organs and abdominal pain. Once you’re diagnosed to have one, you may undergo treatment.

In most cases, hormonal birth control is given. This treatment controls the hormone that’s directed to the cells. But this isn’t an ideal treatment if you wish to get pregnant.

If you don’t like using a birth control, your doctor may prescribe a medicine that shuts down your system’s hormonal access. With this treatment, you’ll feel like you’re already in the menopausal stage as you’ll feel dry or lose sex drive.

For some patients, they opted for a surgical operation that removes the cells. However, the absolute cure for this condition is hysterectomy. This is a surgical operation that involves the removal of all or just part of your uterus. But this operation will only be considered by your doctor after all treatments have been tried without improving your condition.

Jus like other medical conditions, doctors are still finding reasons why some women develop it while others don’t. If you have a family member who has this condition, then you’re more likely to develop endometriosis. This means that if your mother, sister or daughter has it, it increases your risk for this condition.

Despite that, it’s still unclear whether or not genes may come into play when it comes to this condition.

SparkPeople A Great Online Food Diary

Introduced to me by market.android.com, SparkPeople has been a useful tool for me to control my caloric intake. I have been using it for over two weeks now.

What is SparkPeople?

It is one of the many online food diaries that you can sign up with. It works like WeightWatchers, sans fee. With this tool, I can input each food that I eat. It is a fussy task but it keeps me on track.

What I like most about SparkPeople is that it lets me know how much calories are left for me to consume in order to reach my daily caloric goal. Essentially, it gives me control on what to eat each day. Unfortunately, I always end up consuming more calories than the recommended daily goal of calories to maintain my weight.

The calories of each food stored in SparkPeople’s database are not 100% accurate. For that reason, I add 10% of the total estimated calories to give me a more accurate figure.

Apart from that, I can also track my weight and other measurements that can help me determine whether I am losing or gaining weight.

As regards to my progress, hmmmm, let us just say I wish I could avoid certain food temptations.

Benefits of Colorful Vegetables

The colors in fruit and vegetables are caused by carotenoids, which are organic pigments. Experts say that they are not just used to make fruit and vegetables appear colorful but these pigments have a lot of health benefits. According to recent studies, carotenoids found in pumpkin, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and other fruit and vegetables are useful in preventing the development of metabolic syndrome.

In addition to that, people who eat a diet rich in carotenoids betacarotenoid, lutein and zexanthin are less likely to suffer from the most common form of kidney cancer.

Carotenoids are also good for women in lowering the risk of ovarian cancer.

Because of that, I am hoping the carrot seedlings I planted in my mini-garden will grow so I could have regular supply of carrot slash carotenoids.

Cranberries Can Cure Bladder Infection

CranberriesI love cranberry juice. If I have enough money, I usually buy cranberry juice. Some of my favorite foods in a restaurant are flavored using cranberries. Apart from its culinary uses, it is interesting to note that cranberries can cure bladder infection.

Cranberries are acidic. This acidity is thought to combat against urinary infection. Cranberries are rich in fructose and anti-oxidants. The said components prevent the bacteria from harboring the bladder and eventually cure bladder infection.

Cranberries are also rich in Vitamin C. Its richness in Vitamin C boosts cranberry-juice drinker's immune system and may fight against bladder infection.

However, like other home remedies to cure bladder infection, cranberries should not be used as a cure rather as a support for conventional medicine.

Can Orchiectomy Cure Prostate Cancer?

After we found out almost three years ago that my father is suffering from prostate cancer, his doctor discussed the treatment options. My father could either undergo orchiectomy or hormonal therapy. The latter is more expensive because it is done every month. The former is a one-time treatment.

Treatment for prostate cancer

Orchiectomy is one of the ways to cure prostate cancer. Or if you have enlargement of the prostate glands, then you may opt for orchiectomy. This procedure is the removal of your testis, which produces testosterone. Testosterone is said to be the food of the prostate cancer. So if the food is eliminated, then the cancer cells will eventually die. This explanation is from my father's urologist.

Disadvantages

The drawbacks of this surgical procedure are erectile dysfunction, sterility, weight gain, hot flashes, osteoporosis, larger breasts, and loss of muscles mass and of sexual interest. Insanity is not included.

So the question, can orchiectomy do its job well in treating prostate cancer? My father's urologist says yes. The success rate for orchiectomy is high. But father opted for hormonal therapy.

Semen Analysis: Three-Hour Experiment

Laboratory Test: Semen Analysis [Flickr.com by tuffy1973]

The evaluation of infertility cases and postvasectomy cases are the two primary reasons for semen analysis.

I still have a semi-vivid image in my mind when we had a three-hour experiment for semen analysis. The guys had to be absent for one subject because they needed to "concentrate"…if you know what I mean. True man or semi-man, he/half-he had to donate his sperm for semen analysis experiment.

While the men were "away," we, ladies, had to prepare the laboratory equipment for the said activity. And after maybe almost an hour of waiting, the guys arrived sweaty and, surprisingly, in high spirits.

Then, the fun began.

If I could accurately remember, the first thing we did was to sniff the chlorine type smell of the semen. (It wasn’t necessary, but we did it anyway.) And then we measured the volume (normal semen volume ranges between 2 and 5 ml) and its pH (normal is slightly alkaline); and determined its viscosity (normal viscosity will pour in droplets).

Looking at the sperm through the microscope is the most interesting part because we could really see the tadpole-like rapid movement of the sperm. In fertility cases, the actual number of sperm present, the motility of the sperm in a semen specimen, and the sperm's morphology are valid measurements.

We all know that there's only one (or sometimes two) sperm that can successfully penetrate the ovum, but the sperm count normal values are 20 to 160 million sperm per milliliter. Isn't it frustrating when you have countless sperms and only one could get in? (lol)

Furthermore, even though you have enough sperm count but the motility of your semen is not that aggressive, impregnating a woman will be formidable. One male classmate of mine had a grade 4 (excellent rapid movement). No wonder after a year, he's already a father.

And don’t ever think that having a handsome face is already enough because the face or the appearance of his sperm should also count in fertility case. It is essential for the guy's semen to have 70% to 99.9% good looking sperms, like this:

However, the semen analysis is only a part of fertility test.

Well, that's all folks. We had an exciting three-hour laboratory experiment. Ciao.

Memorizing the Cranial Nerves

[pennhealth.com]
Oh, Oh, Oh, To Touch And Feel A Great Victory is Such Happiness. Hmm, wondering what I meant? This was how I memorized the 12 Cranial Nerves, during my college years. I used mnemonics. We were taught that way to facilitate the memorization process.

Oh = CN I Olfactory
Oh= CN II Optic
Oh = CN III Oculomotor
To= CN IV Trochlear
Touch = CN V Trigeminal
And = CN VI Abducens
Feel = CN VII Facial
A = CN VIII Auditory
Great = CN IX Glossopharyngeal
Victory = CN X Vagus
Such = CN XI Spinal Accessory
Happiness = CN XII Hypoglossal

Fortunately, until now, I can still remember them with the help of mnemonics.
