About HIV: Clinical Stages of HIV Infection


Scientists discovered about HIV in the 1970s. Since then, there is a constant rise in terms of patients suffering from the symptoms of HIV. Although there is treatment available for HIV-AIDS, it is not very effective. Therefore, it is important to take precautionary measures to avoid being infected. With the right knowledge about HIV, you can avoid such infection.

About HIV symptoms

Usually, people infected with HIV do not feel ill right after being infected. Some people, however, develop acute retroviral syndrome immediately. They experience fever-like illness accompanied by fever, joint pains, and rash. Their lymph nodes become enlarged.

When we talk about HIV initial stage of infection, the sufferer becomes highly infectious during this stage. By that  it means, he/she can easily transmit the virus to another person. To determine whether or not HIV is already present in a person’s body is for him/her to undergo HIV antibodies test.

The World Health Organization (WHO) categorized HIV infection based on symptoms, infections, and signs.

Primary infection. It is asymptomatic. This would mean a person does not feel any symptoms related to HIV.

Stage 1. Swelling of the lymph nodes

Stage 2. Patient experiences minor weight loss and recurrent upper respiratory tract infections.

Stage 3. Symptoms will include unexplained chronic diarrhea, fever, bacterial infections, pulmonary tuberculosis, and oral candidiasis. Infection at this stage also manifests acute necrotizing inflammation in the mouth. Some patients with clinical stage 4 about HIV may already develop Acute Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

Stage 4. All patients with clinical stage 4 about HIV have Acute Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

HIV-AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV infection.
