Benefits of Colorful Vegetables

The colors in fruit and vegetables are caused by carotenoids, which are organic pigments. Experts say that they are not just used to make fruit and vegetables appear colorful but these pigments have a lot of health benefits. According to recent studies, carotenoids found in pumpkin, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and other fruit and vegetables are useful in preventing the development of metabolic syndrome.

In addition to that, people who eat a diet rich in carotenoids betacarotenoid, lutein and zexanthin are less likely to suffer from the most common form of kidney cancer.

Carotenoids are also good for women in lowering the risk of ovarian cancer.

Because of that, I am hoping the carrot seedlings I planted in my mini-garden will grow so I could have regular supply of carrot slash carotenoids.

Knee Pain Remedy: More Delicious Option

I do not have osteoarthritis but my right knee aches after kneeling. I am not sure why. But if this is a symptom of osteoarthritis, I do not want to go to the route of steroid injection and surgery.

According to a study in Melbourne, eating fruits regularly can lower the risk of developing lesions in the bone marrow. These lesions are said to be a marker for knee osteoarthritis. Researchers found that fruits rich in vitamin C are effective in alleviating knee pain problem. These fruits would include kiwifruit, mangoes, papaya, and grapefruit.

Good thing is that mangoes, grapefruit and papaya are easily accessible here in Davao. Unfortunately, kiwifruit is not readily available in our local market.

Increase Platelets through Durian

Individuals who hate durian should start loving durian no matter how obnoxious the taste and odor is. This is especially true if you have developed symptoms of dengue, a hemorrhagic fever that causes clotting of blood in the internal organs that may lead to death.

Durian, like Tawa Tawa leaves, is recommended by herbalists for dengue hemorrhagic fever. Even patients who have tried such remedy could attest durian's benefits in increasing platelet count.

Since I do not like durian, I just have to apply mosquito repellant lotion every time I go out. It keeps me safe from dengue-carrying mosquito and from eating the repulsive durian.

Ultima-C Sodium Ascorbate for Asthmatic

Ultima-C is a natural vitamin C that can be absorbed, easily, by the body cells. It has vitamin C metabolites that maximize cellular utilization of this type of vitamin.

My mom is asthmatic and she’s taking Ultima-C three times a day. As a result, she does not experience any asthma attack.

I have tried to consume it to alleviate my on and off cold and cough. I’m not sure if it is just a psychological effect, but my cold and cough have improved after taking it for days. However, I’m still unsure of its effects to the organs of my body considering one capsule contains 500 mg of sodium ascorbate and I need to take it 3x a day. Now, that’s a lot of vitamin C.

Apart from asthma, cold and cough, Ultima-C may be able to improve other illnesses, such as cancer (the ad says it is super antioxidant), bleeding gums, fever, cataract, allergies, among others.

Even though Ultima-C is 100% pure and natural, I’m afraid it can still cause negative effects to the body in the future. Nonetheless, I need to take it just to get rid of my on and off cold and cough.

Dark Chocolates for Raising Good Cholesterol—the HDL

I, now, have an excuse to eat more dark chocolates every day.

A study revealed that eating dark chocolates a day can significantly raise HDL or good cholesterol by 9%. In this study, volunteers consumed 100g of dark chocolates and that is about 2300kJ of dark chocolates.

I need to raise my HDL or good cholesterol. So, the delicious way of increasing it is to eat dark chocolates. Right now, I am nibbling on Godiva dark chocolate while writing this… nom nom nom.

Neti Pot for Nasal Irritation

I am prone to common cold these days. But I think this is not just a cold virus rather an infection in my sinus or nasal allergies. For this reason, I am planning to purchase a Neti Pot to alleviate my stuffy nose.

I discovered the benefits of using Neti Pot a few months ago and I am planning to use it as soon as I could get my hands on it.

Neti Pot, for one, is a drug-free treatment for nasal irritation. It is also considered as an all-natural cost-effective remedy for sinus infections. Basically, its main function is to clear the nasal passages of mucus.

I just wish that through this natural remedy, the nasal discomfort that I feel will be gone for good.

Alternative to Fish for Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Here’s good news for individuals who abhor eating fish. As we all know, fish is considered as high in omega-3 fatty acids, which revealed to be helping in reducing blood pressure and the risk of having heart attack.

As an alternative to fish, you may eat plant foods that contain alpha-linolenic acid. This substance will be converted by your body into omega-3 fatty acids.

But what are the best sources of this acid? Well, you can have walnuts, tofu, flaxseed, as well as canola and soybean oils.

What Doctors Want You to Know About

Because of the Internet, it is easier for us to conduct a research about our symptoms. Some of us may even diagnose our own sickness through the information provided by Doctor Google. Although online medical resources are useful in helping you get a clear understanding about your symptoms, it is still necessary that you consult with your doctor to establish a proper diagnosis and perform right course of action.

There are advantages and disadvantages of using the online tools in knowing more about your symptoms. For instance, headache may be listed as one of the symptoms of brain tumor. But just because you have a headache does not mean you also have brain cancer. That's because symptoms may have different meanings.

Doctors, on the other hand, also utilize the online resources to help them diagnose their patients' diseases.

The bottom line is, when it comes to your health, there are things doctors want you to know about the web.

Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma—Exams and Symptoms

Andy Whitfield is yet another victim of this cancer of the lymphoid tissue called non-hodgkin's lymphoma. Andy is an actor who portrays Spartacus in "Spartacus: Blood and Sand."

Non-hodgkin's lymphoma is a type of cancer with no known cause. Most lymphomas, however, are developed because of weakened immune systems. For that reason, patients who underwent organ transplant may increase their risk of having this type of cancer.

Biopsy and blood exam are two of the tests that can help doctors diagnose non-hodgkin's lymphoma. In a biopsy, the sample utilized is taken from a lymph node. However, other tissues may also be used as a specimen for biopsy exam. A complete blood count, which is a type of blood examination, is also requested to know the number of cells in the blood.

The symptoms of non-hodgkin's lymphoma we need to watch out for are night sweating, fever, swelling of lymph nodes, and unintentional weight loss. Thankfully, I don't experience these symptoms even though I think that, lately, my immune system is weakening.

Spinach for eyesight protection

Studies showed that having spinach twice a week may avert macular degeneration and cataracts which are age-related.

The Filipino term for spinach is kangkong. Sadly, I am not a big fan of this veggie. But after learning its benefits, I will start teaching my taste buds to like spinach for the sake of the health of my eyesight.

But what's in spinach that makes it beneficial for the eyes? It has high amount of lutein that aids in safeguarding the macula from oxidative stress and high-energy photons of blue light.

Consumption of fish twice a week is said to reduce the risk of dry-eye syndrome (dry eyes), a condition in which tear production is decreased.

In that case, I don't have to worry about dry-eye syndrome because we eat fish almost every day. Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that support normal development of eyes.

You can try fish-oil supplements if you dislike fish.

Sweet Potato for improving night vision

One way to improve night vision is to eat sweet potatoes. In the Philippines, we are fortunate to have agricultural lands suitable for growing sweet potatoes or kamote in Tagalog and Bisaya. This root crop is rich in Vitamin A that makes it helpful in improving and protecting eyesight. But do not eat too much of it. You might end up farting all night.

Hair Remover: Epilin And Body Natur

Body Natur and Epilin are two hair remover products, but the latter provides better results than the former.

Price. Epilin hair remover is cheaper than Body Natur.

Application. Both Epilin and Body Natur require low heat. However, Epilin hair remover does not harden easily after removing from heat, thereby, giving me the time to let the wax cool (for a few seconds) before spreading it on my clean, dry skin.

Body Natur hair remover, on the other hand, hardens quickly after heating it, which compels me to spread the hot wax on my skin. Because of that, I always end up having burned skin.

Effectiveness. More strands of underarm hair can be removed using Epilin hair remover than utilizing the wax of Body Natur.

Ingredients

Epilin is made from natural tree resin, natural beeswax, vegetable oil. Plus, it is 100% natural.

While Body Natur contains colophinium, glyceryl rosinate, cera microcristallina, paraffin wax, cera alba, parfum.

Overall, Epilin is more effective than Body Natur. This is, of course, based on my experience.

Confirmatory Test For Diabetes

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

My father's FBS is slightly higher than normal. By the way, Fasting Blood Sugar, better known as FBS, is just a screening test for diabetes. Because of his elevated FBS result, he needs to undergo a follow-up evaluation to confirm diabetes.

One of the confirmatory tests for diabetes is oral glucose tolerance test. This laboratory examination would involve extraction of blood for a fasting plasma glucoses test. The patient is then given a very sweet drink, specifically a drink that contains 75 grams of sugar. At timed intervals of 1, 2 and 3 hours, blood samples are collected after taking the sweet drink.

As of this date, my father has not agreed to undergo any confirmatory tests for diabetes. But I hope that his elevated FBS result is not an indication of such metabolic disorder.

Antioxidants Alert: Antioxidant And Radiation Therapy Or Chemotherapy Are Incompatible

There is no doubt that the health benefits of antioxidants are immense.

For people who want to enhance their immune system, they may take garlic or nibble on grapes as they are known to have high antioxidants contents.

For individuals who want to defy aging, they may increase their consumption of foods rich in antioxidants, such as corn, squash, and the likes.

For someone who wants to reduce their vulnerability to cancer, taking of antioxidants is also advisable.

However, consuming antioxidants at higher-than-recommended dosage may cause interference with certain treatments. Doctors warn their patients not to go overboard when it comes to taking of antioxidants. They explicated that since antioxidants are capable of destroying free radicals, it is also likely that high consumption of antioxidant supplements may diminish the effectiveness of the treatment.

In order to avoid such ineffectiveness, we must not take higher doses of antioxidants. No matter how beneficial antioxidants are, too much of it may still hamper our health.

Prevent Breast Cancer: Fresh Mushroom Plus Green Tea

Fresh Mushrooms

Devouring at least 10g of fresh mushrooms will decrease chances of developing breast cancer by 64% according to a study conducted by the University of Western Australia. The only problem I am facing is how to find fresh mushrooms.

Green Tea

Apart from mushrooms, green tea is also dubbed to provide health benefits in fighting against breast cancer. Now, I should start looking for green tea that tastes good, rather than having an insipid tea while working.

Cancer-Fighting Food: An Egg A Day Keeps Breast Cancer Away

Egg is a cancer-fighting food

Egg is not my favorite food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I do not consume egg on a daily basis. I, probably, have eggs on my dining plate once or twice a month. But after knowing the benefits of eating an egg a day, I may include it on my cancer-fighting everyday menu.

According to Reader’s Digest, a recent US National Institutes of Health study reveals that consuming one egg a day can reduce the risk of developing breast cancer by 24%. This is because egg is high in choline, which is considered as a water-soluble essential nutrient and grouped within the B-complex vitamins.

Other sources of choline are meat and nuts.

Ovarian Cancer: Who Are At High Risk Of Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian Cancer

When the cell growth and division goes awry, cancer begins to emerge. In this case, there are new cells being formed, which are not needed by the body. Old cells, on the other hand, do not extinguish from the body as they normally do. And that extra cells formed can create a mass of tissue which can now be called a growth or tumor.

A malignant tumor in the ovary or ovarian cancer can grow and invade other organs next to the ovaries. These organs can be the fallopian tubes and uterus.

Who are at risk of ovarian cancer?

Women with family history of ovarian cancer are said to be at high risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Women with family history of cancer of the breast, colon, rectum, uterus have an increased risk of ovarian cancer.

Women with personal history of cancer, such as cancer of the uterus, breast, colon, rectum are also considered at high risk of ovarian cancer.

Studies showed that women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer are females over 55 years old. Doctors also put older women who have never been pregnant at risk of ovarian cancer.

Women who take menopausal hormone therapy are also at high risk of developing ovarian cancer.
